I’ve heard of Bonito Island once or twice but I’ve never been there. Our office, Hands On Manila, decided to have our outing there. So, along with some volunteers, we headed to this heart-shaped paradise in Batangas.

It was a few hours drive to Mabini port and a boat ride before we got to Bonito Island. The island has a sand bar that extends when the tide gets low. Be careful though because it is not fine sand but full of shells and corals where you can find some of the sea’s beautiful jewels.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with welcome drinks. The rooms were clean and the bath rooms wide. Before embarking for a sumptuous lunch, we excitedly took a dip in the sea where a world of beautiful corals and sea creatures abound.

We snorkeled around the area, trying to avoid the part where the current was strong. And while swimming, ferries plying the Batangas-Puerto Galera route passed by.

All day we enjoyed the beauty of the underwater. Nemo was there waiting for us playing peek-a-boo. Trying to beat the dusk, we walked in the periphery of the island finding more interesting worlds at the other side.

By nightfall, we lit a bonfire and had a great time at the sand bar, singing, playing charades, drinking and doing so many things. The moon was slowly rising, a fascinating movement to watch. Some shooting stars also appeared at the sky.

The next day, we hopped on to the small nearby island where a lighthouse is built. The corals were less interesting than those in Bonito Island. But all in all, it was all fun and sun burn. :-) Now, I can say that I look like an island maiden.
